This beautiful poem was written in 1979 by my friend John H. during his first year in recovery. It was a time of uncertainty and transition for John, and I think this work captures the mood perfectly. It’s a honest depiction of life in early recovery and it’s all there; the pain, regret, despair, hope and finally, deliverance. John celebrated an amazing 42 years sober last month. Today at age 84, he lights the path for many of us who follow his lead, experiencing miracles daily!
The need for someone to be near
Someone compassionate, warm and dear
Bane of my existence-anger…
The first time I crossed paths with Brother Blue in the mid 70s, my attention span was insufficient for the moment. I’m guessing that’s not uncommon for those who didn’t know about him, it was unfortunate for sure. I can’t recall my exact impression. Most likely I thought it just one more nutty attention-seeker in a place full of them c. I had no idea about Brother Blue — a man who could lift your spirit right out of your shoes and into the wild blue, if you were willing, is anything but common.

On his home turf in and…
It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently.
-Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Seems each passing year brings me greater appreciation for the synergies between leadership development work and the care & nurturing of the soul.
For the past few years, since retiring from corporate life, I’ve worked with recovering addicts and have found it fascinating how often the same basic principles apply to both leaders and recovering addicts. Eventually I came to the realization that it’s all about the human condition. We’re all battling the same demons as it turns out.
One of the people in that field I most admire…
One interesting and overlooked irony of human nature is that while we all have self-limiting beliefs and opinions, we can’t help but see ourselves as protagonists in any story we’re involved in . The key to this supposed kookiness comes from a quasi-illusion that the center of the universe is wherever we are at any given point in time.
That idea was once thought to be totally silly, but as SCIENCE* marches forward, we are learning new “facts” that indicate we may have prematurely judged some things we once thought silly.
In recent years, we’ve seen a Great Leap Forward…

12 Step recovery is a blessing for many addicts. Miracles happen every day thanks to the 12 Steps and the fellowships built around them.
Many lives have been transformed. Countless children have gained a mother and/or a father, in place of a troubling void — or worse, a self-centered attention-gobbling burden. It’s impossible to overstate what it means for a child to gain (or regain) a reliable, responsible, loving parent.
When I was first found recovery in the mid-1980s at age 29, I found a layered entrance created by my ever-distorting mind. My first thought, seeing meetings up close was…

Having had enough frustration with the 2020s already, recently I switched to writing spoof news and am finding it much more enjoyable, even therapeutic. Still every now and then a serious thought gets triggered that might be worth elaborating upon. Whether this one is worthy or not I can’t say. I’ll leave that judgement to you.
Personally, I always find it strange how easy it is to gloss over some details in plain sight when I’m just not tuned in. It’s reassuring to know that it’s fairly common. Most of us have experienced the Baader-Meinhoff phenomenon. That’s when you’re introduced…
The Great Pandemic of 2020 may be over but the struggle for humanity’s survival is just beginning. Those who survived the pandemic must consider themselves very fortunate today but they can’t just rest on their laurels. No sir! Not by a longshot.

By some estimates it appears only 99.758% of the world population has survived the fearsome, awful wrath of COVID-19. Now that the dust has cleared, and they find they’ve made it, despite the cruel blow that nature has administered, they now awaken to find a heavy burden rests on their weary shoulders.
But there are some rays of…

It’s surely a sign of the times since it would make no sense at any other point in history. COVID v. Cancel i.e. No Life is a new board game modeled after Extreme LIFE, in which players move around a board landing on various recreational activities, life events, and random encounters. They are then required to name the reason why each cannot happen — typically it’s either COVID-19 or the other formidable current day theme of Cancel Culture.
Players are awarded points based on their question’s level of difficulty or the importance of the non-event. Bonus points are available for…

The beloved, down-to-earth, everyman leader of Catholicism Pope Francis, sat down this past week with DJs Dennis Elsas and Bill Flanagan on their weekly show. The Fab Forum is a fan favorite, broadcast on the Beatles Channel.
Yours truly was also there and, although they forbid me asking questions — or any speaking whatsoever for that matter, I was able to capture a fascinating exchange. The pope’s words were translated by the now aging hipster priest Father Guido Sarducci of Saturday Night Live fame, who said he was honored to come out of retirement to help out. Enjoy!
